OPSEU

Collective Agreement
Our primary rulebook. It outlines your legal rights regarding pay, seniority, and job security, protecting you from arbitrary changes by management.

Union Lingo 101: Canadian Labour Terms
Collective Agreement
The Collective Agreement (CA) is the legally binding contract between OPSEU Local 654 and Northern College. It secures your wages, benefits, and working conditions. For members, this means your rights aren't just promises—they are law.
Grievance
A Grievance is a formal complaint filed when the employer violates the CA. It is your primary tool for workplace protection. If a manager ignores a rule in the contract, a grievance ensures the union can step in to fix it.
Seniority
Seniority is based on your length of continuous service. It is critical during job postings, layoffs, and vacation scheduling. Your accumulated time at the college gives you priority and job security as part of the union collective.
Labour Relations Board
The Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) is an independent agency that resolves disputes between unions and employers. They ensure that bargaining is done in good faith. If the college violates labour laws, the OLRB acts as a neutral judge.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Understanding our contract is the first step in defending it. When we know the terms that govern our work, we are empowered to advocate for fair treatment and protect the rights we have fought for at Northern College.

If you haven't already, read your collective agreement and get familiar with it to better understand your rights as a worker!
